session next month appeared Saturday as 14 legislators from the area endorsed a measure It called for authorizing a countywide occupational tax of up to one per cent for school purposes Breathitt has said he may expand the call to aid other school districts if similar unanimity can be found on such a measure Seven of Jefferson 22 legislators did not attend a closed meeting where the measure was supported and Democratic Sen A McCann abstained from voting saying he had not received a copy of the proposed measure The bill allows Louisville and Jefferson County school boards to ask Jefferson Fiscal Court to levy the occupational tax If some 33000 voters sign petitions objecting to the measure within 30 days after fiscal court action the matter would be placed on a November ballot for public vote Louisville and Jefferson count voters have rejected tax increases for schools on at least two occasions Breathitt announced last month he would call the session in June to aid Louisville and Jefferson County schools with their financial problems and asked local officials to draw up a plan on which a concensus of agreement could be reached Louisville Attorney Named President Of State Choirs sang its second annual service in Christ Church Episcopal last night in a magnificently thrilling manner under the artistic and spirited direction of Dr Leo Sowerby director of the College of Church Music Washington (D C) Cathedral The choirs participating were the boys and men of Christ Church Lexington the boys and men of Christ Church Cathedral Louisville and the choir of Sayre School The first and last of these three groups are directed by Robert Quade organist-choir master of Christ Church Gilbert Macfarlane functions in that capacity at the Louisville Cathedral A majestic processional opened the service using Flor rousing for choir organ trumpets and tympani Dr Sowerby kept the multiple choir going solidly through an imposing group of movements from the communion service and great anthems A and a by Sumsion both composed in 1959 came first These were followed by three of the more familiar master works of early English composers Gibbons Byrd and Weelkes The Streets SANTO DOMINGO (UPI)-Do-minican junta and rebel forces Saturday fought two separate battles on the streets of Santo Domingo Unconfirmed reports indicated heavy rebel casualties A rebel spokesman charged that American helicopters were flying Dominican reinforcements to a junta force which he said was surrounded by rebels in the western part of the city US Marines were caught in the middle in some of the earlier shooting in the downtown section but there were not reports of Marine casualties The two and a half hour battle in the downtown section developed after an early-morning exchange of fire between rebels and US paratroopers One paratrooper was wounded during the fighting Saturday night heavy fighting was reported in the western part of the city around the government transportation center about one mile from the held safety corridor The rebel spokesman said US helicopters flying out of the San Isidro Air Base were bringing reinforcements and food to about 250 junta soldiers surrounded by rebels During the exchange of fire in the downtown section members of the United Nations peace team arrived in the city and were driven through a rebel-held sector They heard scattered sniper fire The battle was started by troops loyal to the junta of Gen Antonio Imbert Barrera At a point three blocks north of the US Embassy they fired into a rebel-held district just across from the safety corridor guarded by US Marines The rebels returned the fire and when they did they were shooting into Marine positions The Marines in turn fired back The Marines were well
