Can I make this recipe without buttermilk?

If you don’t want to use buttermilk or do not have it on hand you can make it without it but you will want to substitute with someone else. A common substitute for buttermilk is a mixture of non-dairy milk (such as almond, soy, or oat milk) and lemon juice or white vinegar.

Greek yogurt can also be substituted but you may need to experiment with ratios to achieve a similar taste.

What gives ranch dressing its taste?

Ranch dressing gets its distinctive taste from a combination of ingredients that contribute to a flavorful and creamy profile. The key components that give ranch dressing its taste include mayo, buttermilk, sour cream, and different spices.

The combination of these ingredients creates a well-balanced flavor profile that is both tangy and savory with herbal and garlic undertones.

Tips for making this recipe

Let the ranch dressing chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes before serving. This allows the flavors to meld and intensify. After chilling, check the consistency of the dressing. If it has thickened too much, you can adjust it by adding a bit more milk.

What mayo to use

Traditional, full-fat mayonnaise is a classic choice for ranch dressing. It provides richness and a creamy texture. Look for high-quality mayonnaise with a good balance of flavors. Olive oil mayonnaise is made with olive oil instead of vegetable oil. It adds a different flavor profile to the ranch dressing, offering a hint of olive oil richness.

Avocado oil mayonnaise is made with avocado oil, providing a unique and slightly nutty flavor. It’s a good choice if you prefer a mayonnaise with a different oil base.
