What is the standard blueprint paper size? Blueprints and house plans will come in several standard sizes. Two of the most common architectural drawing sizes are 18” x 24” and 24” x 36”, but you can also find them in 30” x 42” and 36” x “48” sizes. Large sizes are necessary on bigger and more expensive properties.

One option for how to get a blueprint of your house is to search online public record systems, like the Nationwide Environmental Title Research. If your community has an online archive system, you may also be able to request access to your blueprint there.

You should be able to check with your city or county's Assessor's office. Often this information is available online through their websites. This official info is what your taxes are based on, so is probably the best "official" number for what your house square footage is.

Measuring Your House

You need to find the gross external floor area (GEFA) of your house – both upstairs and downstairs. GEFA is defined as the area of a dwelling measured externally at each floor level. The best way is to go outside and measure the length and width of your house and multiply those figures together.

Measure the width and length of every room in feet. Multiply the width by the length and note down the total square footage of every room in the corresponding space on the property sketch. For instance, If a room is 20 feet by 10 feet, the total square footage is 200 sq.
