I recently completed a strict 30 day Paleo Challenge that was inspired by Chris Kresser’s book, “The Paleo Cure.”
I had some amazing results – improved energy and trimmed waistline – but it wasn’t without its challenges.

Having eggs for breakfast every morning can get monotonous.

So since then, I’ve done some research and put together a list of Paleo smoothies that you can blend together on those busy mornings or as a Paleo snack.

On a 30 day Paleo Challenge like the one outlined by Chris Kresser he suggests to avoid added sugars – even natural sweeteners like honey – for the 30 day period.

This is an attempt to rewire the brain to halt cravings for sweetness.

Some of the smoothies below may have added honey or dates, but you can try omitting this if you’re still in your initial 30 day Paleo period (which is much like a cleanse), or if your goal is weight loss.

You’ll notice many of these smoothies are not low-carb because they contain fruit.

Fruit is a great source of vitamins, but if you’re trying to shed pounds quickly, you may want to go a little easy on the fruit.

Green smoothies containing low-to-no carb veggies like spinach, kale, broccoli, and even squash are good smoothie ingredients for weight loss smoothies.

What is the Paleo Diet?

A lot of people ask, “what is the paleo diet?” The main premise of the Paleo diet is that you eat foods that our body has evolved to handle.

Our DNA – or genetic code – is pretty much the same as our ancestors from 10,000+ years ago, but we’ve created “food products” and eating habits that our body just doesn’t “understand.”

According to the doctors and scientists that promote the Paleo diet we should be eating food that our “caveman” ancestors would eat.

Of course, this is stretching it a bit because almond milk is “paleo” and a caveman would ask, “Well how do you get milk from almonds?” Because obviously some mechanical processing is involved. But anyway…

On the Paleo Diet you can eat meat, seafood, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds.

Therefore, what you want to avoid on the Paleo diet is Grains, Beans (including peanuts and soy), Dairy, added Sugars and most processed foods.

And avoid eating oils like canola, margarine and vegetable oil, and instead reach for olive oil or avocado oil.

List of delicious Paleo Smoothie Recipes

Coconut and Strawberry Smoothie Delight

This is a sweet and tasty Paleo smoothie that tastes “creamy” thanks to the coconut milk.

If you have an intolerance to strawberries, then you could substitute raspberries for strawberries.

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut milk
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 frozen banana (sliced)
2 cups frozen strawberries

Preparation time: Only a couple minutes

Instructions:

Measure out your coconut milk and vanilla extract then add these along with the fruit to the blender and blend until you’ve got a nice smooth smoothie. 🙂

Coconut and Raspberry with Chia Seeds Paleo Smoothie

This one is similar to the smoothie above, but it incorporates some chia seeds as well. Chia is an amazing source of fiber so it may help keep you feel full for longer.

But when you use Chia seeds in your smoothies remember to drink it immediately. If you let the smoothie sit, the Chia seeds will thicken up and get a gel-like consistency.

Ingredients:

1 Cup of Raspberries
1/2 Frozen Banana
1 Tablespoon of Chia Seeds
1 Cup Coconut Milk
1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Pour the coconut milk into the blender first. (This helps prevent the other ingredients from sticking to the bottom).
  2. Toss in the raspberries, banana, chia seeds and the vanilla extract.
  3. Turn the blender on, starting at a low speed and increase as needed.
  4. Once the liquid looks even, pour into a cup and enjoy immediately to conserve as many nutrients as possible.

Yummy Blueberry Paleo Smoothie

Ingredients:

1 Cup of Blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1 Banana (fresh or frozen)
1 Cup of Coconut Milk
Handful of Ice
1/2 teaspoon of Vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Add the coconut milk into the blender.
  2. Next, toss in the blueberries, banana, the ice and the vanilla extract (if you want to use it).
  3. Start at low speed to chop up the ice then increase speed if required to get it nice and smooth.

You can add a tablespoon of chia seeds to this smoothie if you want to add some more fiber.

Nuts about Chocolate Paleo Smoothie

This one requires a fairly powerful blender because you need to blend up some hazelnuts and ice cubes.

I like chocolate bars, but these sweetened treats are usually milk chocolate or have sugar added so they’re off limits to Paleo. And I’m actually not a huge fan of cacao powder.

But for those you who want to try chocolate smoothies, you can give these a try.

Ingredients:

3/4 cup water
1/2 cup hazelnuts
1 tbsp raw cacao powder
3 dates (pitted)
8 ice cubes

Instructions:

Measure out the water, hazelnuts, cacao and dates and then add then to the blender. Blend it up until smooth. Then add the ice and blend again for 30 seconds.

Drink it up when it’s still nice and cold.

Paleo Smoothie Nutty Chocolate Variation

I often have walnuts at home, but I rarely have hazelnuts. So I had to make a variation of the above Paleo smoothie recipe.

7 delicious Paleo Smoothie Recipes to start your day off right (6)

Ingredients:

3/4 cup of water
1 tablespoon of almond butter
1 tablespoon of cacao powder
Walnuts (about half a handful)
3 dates (pitted) or 1 teaspoon of honey (to offset the cacao’s bitterness)
Coconut flakes (as topping)

Preparation time: just a couple of minutes

Instructions:

Measure out the water, almond butter, and cacao powder and add to the blender. Then toss in your walnuts and dates (or honey). Blend until smooth. Add some coconut flakes to the surface for garnish.

Substitutions and Additions: For a creamier version, try coconut milk instead of water. It’ll froth up nicely. If you want to add some veggies to this smoothie you could try adding in some spinach, avocado, kale or even butternut squash.

Watermelon & Strawberry Summer Delight Paleo Smoothie

This is a light and refreshing smoothie filled with your favorite summer fruits. I’d say it’s more hydrating than filling, but it makes a great paleo treat. You can swap strawberries for your raspberries depending on local availability and your personal preference.

7 delicious Paleo Smoothie Recipes to start your day off right (7)

Ingredients:

2 cups cubed watermelon
1 cup fresh strawberries or raspberries
1 cup frozen blueberries
1 cup ice

Preparationtime: 5minutes

Instructions:

Add all ingredients to your blender and blend it up until smooth. If it is too thick for you, you can add a small amount of water.

Thanksgiving Paleo Smoothie (minus the turkey) – Cranberry and Pumpkin

This smoothie has some interesting ingredients that you don’t usually assume with smoothies: pumpkin and cranberries.

It takes more time to prepare because it requires soaking the cashews and has more ingredients, but if you want some variety, give it a try.

7 delicious Paleo Smoothie Recipes to start your day off right (8)

Ingredients:

1 cup non-dairy milk (such as coconut milk, almond milk or cashew milk)
½ cup fresh pumpkin puree
¼ cup frozen cranberries (fresh, not dried)
¼ cup raw, soaked cashews (soak for a few hours)
1 small apple (chunked)
½ orange (peeled)
1 tablespoon coconut cream
¾ teaspoon cinnamon
1 tbsp honey (optional for sweetening)

Instructions:

Soak the cashews in water for a couple hours. Measure out all the ingredients. Place all ingredients in a high-powered blender and blend it up until smooth.

I highly recommend you check out “The Paleo Cure” by Chris Kresser. It is an easy to read, understandable book that’ll get you started off on the Paleo pathway. You can probably get it at your local library but if not, here is a link to it on Amazon.

What I discovered on on the 30 day Paleo Challenge was the amount of energy I starting having.

It took a couple weeks, but then I started having more energy than I’d had in years. I was able to get up at 5AM and basically keep going until 10PM without tiring. Then when I slept, I slept really well.

For me weight loss wasn’t the goal, but the fat did come off.

If you’re wanting to change your current eating patterns, lose some weight, get more energy and hopefully feel better overall, then check out the Paleo diet. It’s worth looking in to.
